Since the inception of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2007, Delhi Daredevils (DD) have always been in the limelight for the wrong reasons. Be it shabby show in the field or injudicious purchases year-after-year, Daredevils have managed to maintain a place in the heart of its citizens. Delhi is not only the capital city of India, but also home to different migrations in and around the region. Delhiwallahs as they are fondly known, have not tasted any success in the IPL, but still lingers hopes of having a championship run soon.

Players have been replaced, re-purchased, and released but Daredevils still continue to float in the bottom half of the IPL ocean. Several coaches, have come and gone those could only adjure mild improvements but nothing exponential. Many stalwarts have been associated with the team only to bask in individual glory. Millions have been spent over individuals, but never on tactical purchases, which has handicapped Daredevils as a team. IPL 2017 auction: Complete list of sold players with price, Indian Premier League 10

IPL 2017 auction gave another window of opportunity to the owners to get things right provide its hearty fans a flash at the coveted title at the conclusion of IPL 10. Daredevils, in their kit bag, had a total of INR 23.10 crores to splurge, ahead of the auction and that they did. Delhi, before the auction let go off players like Nathan Coulter-Nile, Imran Tahir and Pawan Negi, which was questioning knowing how thin their bowling line-up was with Mohammed Shami being injured and Zaheer Khan s availability a subject to fitness

In an attempt to strengthen the bowling unit, Delhi s first pick was a former Daredevil himself, Angelo Mathews for INR 2 crore. Delhi soon got into a war of money with Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians for Ben Stokes, which could not materialise. Daredevils next purchase was Corey Anderson for INR 1 crore. This was soon becoming the team chockfull of all-rounders, which already had Carlos Braithwaite, Chris Morris and Jayant Yadav in their ranks.

The problem, here lies is that Mathews availability is much like Zaheer, a subject to his fitness. Morris, on the other hand, will leave for national duty halfway into the tournament. Anderson is yet to regain his bowling form, after a back injury and Braithwaite is more of a batsman than a bowler. So loading the team with so many all-rounders may not prove to be quite futile. Delhi finally showed their many power and purchased South Africa s current sensation Kagiso Rabada for INR 5 crore. Rabada s experience in the Indian subcontinent is vast. His shows against India and in the World T20 were only a small sample of his talent. Delhi continued to spent big money as they nabbed Australia s Pat Cummins for INR 4.5 crore. Delhi did manage to steal Navdeep Saini for a bargain price of INR 10 lakh, another addition was in form of the mystery spinner ,Murugan Ashwin, picked up for INR 1 cr.

With Zaheer at the helm of bowling affair, Rabada and Cummins are surely to be form a strong outfit together; problem being Rabada much like Morris will leave early.

Shami, Cummins, Zaheer, Chama Milind and Saini will lead the pace attack. Zaheer and Shami s longevity remains a big question mark, which in all likelihood will pressurise Cummins and Saini. They will have support in the wily Amit Mishra, Shabaaz Nadeem, Ashwin and Jayant, to form a devastating spinning foursome indeed.

In terms of batting, it will be lead by Quinton de Kock, Sam Billings, Karun Nair, Shreyas Iyer, JP Duminy, Sanju Samson, Mayank Agarwal and Rishabh Pant. The one thing positive for Daredevils will be the form of Nair, Iyer and Pant, who have looted runs in the domestic circuit. Duminy, too will fly away, only a few weeks into the tournament leaving the middle order light. Hence, Delhi added some-more firepower to their batting prowess in Aditya Tare and Ankeet Bawane. Tare, has been doing the rounds of IPL playing for different teams, while Bawane s form with bat has been talk of the town in the recent past.

As one can make out, Delhi will not be facing any shortage of wicketkeepers with as many as five of them in the squad. De Kock being the more reputed followed by Billings, Samson, Tare and Pant.

One could argue that leaving out Nathan Coulter-Nile and Imran Tahir was not the smartest of decisions, but when were Daredevils known to make the clever moves?

Given the current make up of the team post the auction, it does seem like Zaheer will have plenty of problems in his hand. From selection woes to player s availability and its ever-persisting captaincy conundrum, it will not be a smooth sailing for the Delhi Daredevils in the upcoming edition of IPL.
