Steven Finn conceded 71 runs picking up five wickets that included a hat-trick. Bharath Seervi lists all expensive figures that included a hat-trick and other related statistics.

It was the opening day of ICC World Cup 2015, the second match of the day but the first in Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). England put Australia to bat first after winning the toss. Australian batsmen dominated the English bowlers. Till the 49th over all the five English bowlers — James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Steven Finn, Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali — conceded more than 60 runs and Australia were nearing the 350-run mark.

At the beginning of the final over of the innings Australia were 336 for four with Glenn Maxwell and Brad Haddin adding over 60 runs in the last five overs. Finn had conceded 63 runs in nine overs and picked up two wickets. The Australians hit eight off the first three balls and tried to get more of the last three.

Finn came back strongly to take three wickets off the next three balls, finishing his spell with a hat-trick. It is interesting to note that 71 runs conceded by Finn are the most by any bowler who took a hat-trick in that innings in One-Day Internationals (ODIs).

Most expensive figures to include a hat-trick in ODIs (50 or more runs)

Therefore, South Africa won the match by one run. The next three cases of Shane Bond, Lasith Malinga (four wickets in four balls) and Shahadat Hossain also resulted in loss for their teams whereas Chetan Sharma‘s efforts were on winning side.
Least runs conceded in an innings to contain a hat-trick is four for 11 by Tajiul Islam — on his ODI debut!

Chaminda Vaas is the only bowler to take a hat-trick on the first three balls of an innings — against Bangladesh in World Cup 2003.

Highest total to include a hat-trick

Australia’s total of 342 for nine is the only total of more than 300 that contained a hat-trick of wickets by the opposition bowler. The previous highest also involved Australia in which they scored 289 for eight that included a hat-trick for Shane Bond of New Zealand in 2007.
