Tiger Pataudi was not loquacious, but he did have a sense of humour — especially one-liners and quick repartees.

The horrific car accident he suffered and the subsequent loss of eye has been well documented. There was always a big question mark if he would ever play cricket again after the injury he suffered. But he came back in quick time and even got a hundred against an English attack in the 1960-61 Madras Test.

Later, Pataudi found himself sitting next to Sir Gubby Allen, former England player but now the President of the MCC.  Allen lauded Pataudi and by way of conversation asked when he first felt confident that he could play Test cricket again after the accident.
