Mike Gatting represents that breed of cricketers who had a great domestic career but their international career took some time initially before taking off. He however represented England cricket team for a long period between 1978 to 1995.

Gatting played a total of 79 Tests and 92 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) for England, in which he scored 4,409 and 2,095 runs. He scored only one double hundred throughout his Test career against India in Chennai and in the same match, Graeme Fowler also scored a double century, also in the same innings. It was the first and the last occasion for England when two batsmen scored double hundreds in the same innings.
