The incident dates back to well after Denis Compton’s retirement. Compton was walking to a club near High Wycombe. He was carrying a cricket bat signed by the England and Australian teams. Lost, Compton left the car to ask for directions at a garage. When he returned to his car Compton was faced by four muggers who demanded money.

Compton apologised: “Sorry, I haven’t any on me, but I have something for you in the car.” The muggers did not suspect anything. Compton then got the bat out and said: “I may not be able to take you all, but I will certainly take the first one of you because you must know that I know how to use this.” The muggers fled.
