Young Sussex cricketer Matthew Hobden, who had been earmarked as a future England international, died aged 22 here on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. His County Cricket Club announced his death, but no reason has been officially declared behind his death.
He is believed to have died suddenly while in Scotland. In a statement posted online, the club said: ‘Sussex Cricket is deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Matthew Hobden. He was an exciting young cricketer with a big future ahead of him in the game. He was a fantastic individual who had progressed through Sussex’s youth and academy ranks, having been born locally in Eastbourne.
Hobden made his First-Class debut for Sussex in 2014 and had represented the county across all three formats over the past two seasons. His shock demise saddened many England and international cricketers, who took to Twitter to share their condolences ending with hashtag ‘RIPHobsey’. Here are some of the tweets:
