If you are an Indian cricketer, you are bound to find support all around the globe. Headingley is no different. India’s Test star Cheteswar Pujar’s contentious dismissal in the English County Championship match between Yorkshire and Warwickshire created a controversy, with several of Yorkshire fans booing the umpires at the end of the day’s play.
Pujara, who wasn’t picked in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions and is instead playing county cricket for Yorkshire, looked very steady during his stay at the crease. He had already struck four boundaries in his innings of 23, before Boyd Rankin, the former Ireland international and now England seamer, got him to edge one to Peter McKay. Replays clearly suggested that player that the ball had bounced before the fielder took the ball. There were no conclusive evidence of it being a clean catch. However, umpire Steve Garratt, after consultation with square-leg umpire Jeremy Lloyds, decided to rule it against the batsman.
Pujara had no choice but to walk back towards the dressing room. The decision upset a section of Yorkshire supporters and they booed Warwickshire players for violating the game’s spirits and later even umpires faced their anger, as they were jeered at the end of day’s play.
