The big stage and a big day in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) with the final between co-hosts Australia and New Zealand. For New Zealand, it was the first time in a World Cup final. Australia, on the other hand, won the World Cup for the fifth time after they beat the Kiwis by seven wickets.
Michael Clarke led his team for one final time in One-Day International (ODI) as he bid goodbye to the coloured clothes, finishing his tenure and run in the limited overs with a World title. It was a dominating performance from the Australians in front of a record-breaking crowd at MCG.
The bowlers did their job restricting New Zealand to 183 while the batsmen led by Clarke and Steve Smith’s half-centuries completed the chase with utmost ease. Clarke joined compatriot Allan Border, Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting who have won World Cup for Australia.
Former players, celebrities took to Twitter to congratulate Australia on their historic win:
World cup champions! Something all Australians can be extremely proud about. And well done @MClarke23 #GoAussies #CricketWorldCup
