The 31st match of Super 10 stage in ICC World T20 2016 was played between India and Australia at Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali, Chandigarh. Batting first, Australia got off to a good start as openers Usman Khawaja and Aaron Finch put up a partnership of 54 runs. After the first wicket, scoring rate went down and no other batsmen were able to accelerate the run-rate after a quick start. Somehow, Australia managed to put a decent total of 160 runs on the board. In reply, Indian openers once again failed and all burden came on the shoulders of Virat Kohli, who first had a decent partnership with Yuvraj Singh, and then with skipper MS Dhoni, which scripted India’s win. Unlike most of the matches in this tournament, this was not a low scoring match and ended with many records being broken. 1. Ravichandran Ashwin’s spell of 2-0-31-1 is the third most expensive spell of two overs bowled by an Indian bowler in a T20I and second most in World T20.
2. Ashwin conceded 22 runs in his first over, his second highest in T20Is. In his worst first over, he conceded 24 runs and that too came against Australia in 2013.
3. Australia’s score after 4 overs was 53 which is their second highest in a T20I; their highest is 55 which came against West Indies at Sydney in 2010.
4. With this victory, India now have 19 wins in their name in World T20 tournament. This is the second most number of wins by any team in this tournament so far. Sri Lanka have won 20 matches in World T20.
5. With this defeat, Australia now have 13 losses to their name in World T20 tournaments. This is the fourth most number of losses by any team in this tournament so far. Bangladesh (19 losses), England (15 losses) and Pakistan (14 losses) are other three teams with most defeats in World T20.
6. This was India’s sixth consecutive win against Australia in T20Is and joint most back to back victories for a team against any individual side in this format of the game. England have beaten New Zealand in six consecutive T20Is.
7. India is the only team to beat Australia nine times in T20Is.
8. Kohli became the fastest to complete 1,500 runs in T20Is in just 39 innings going ahead of Chris Gayle’s record of 44 innings.
9. Kohli became the first player to touch 400-run mark in World T20 while chasing. He did that in just eight innings.
10. Kohli became the first cricketer to receive six Man-of-the-Match awards in a calendar year in T20Is.
11. Ashwin became the first Indian cricketer to take 50 wickets in T20Is.
12. Kohli is also now the second highest run scorer in T20Is while chasing with 918 runs in just 22 innings. Only Brendon McCullum has touched 1000-run mark in T20Is while chasing.
13. Kohli is the only player to have average of above 60 while chasing in T20Is amongst the players who have played more than five matches. Currently, he averages 91.80, which is best amongst the players who have played more than five matches.
14. Kohli broke the previous record of most runs in T20Is in a calendar year. He has now 536 runs in his name in 2016 ahead of Martin Guptill’s 472 runs in 2012.
15. With 21 wickets in 2016, Ashwin becomes the sixth highest wicket taker in a calendar year after Saeed Ajmal (22 wickets in 2010), Al-Amin Hossain (22 wickets in 2016), Shaun Tait (22 wickets in 2010) and Dirk Nannes (27 wickets in 2010).
16. With 401 runs in his name, Kohli is now the leading run scorer against Australia in T20Is. He is also the second highest run getter against an individual side in T20Is. Martin Guptil has 424 runs in his name against South Africa.
17. With 302 runs, Shane Watson is now the highest run getter against India in T20Is.
18. With two wickets today, Watson is now the second highest wicket taker against India in T20Is with 10 wickets in his name.
