It all began with a tweet from Amitabh Bachchan on Wednesday after India’s one-run win against Bangladesh in the ICC World T20 2016, which was backed by MS Dhoni. The iconic Indian actor was upset with Indian commentators not crediting the national team and speaking more on the opposition. Dhoni, who already does not gel very well with the media, retweeted Bachchan and expressed his support. (news)
Thinking that he was being referred to, commentator Harsha Bhogle put up a long post on Facebook clarifying the role of commentators. During India’s must-win game against Australia at Mohali, many fans on Twitter were upset with Sanjay Manjrekar‘s commentary as they felt he was not giving Indian cricketers enough credit. In addition, many accused him for being critical on Yuvraj Singh, who was struggling after twisting his ankle.
As Kohli came close to guide India to another remarkable win, Manjrekar soon began trending on Twitter with fans showering displeasure towards his commentary. At the other end, people have been amused by Virender Sehwag and Shoaib Akhtar‘s stint with Hindi commentary.
Sanjay manjrekar, you were shit as a commentator today; #yuvraj played well under his situation #kohli #IndiavsAustralia
