Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) take on Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in the 44th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Saturday. KKR are coming to this tie with a win against Delhi Daredevils (DD) while KXIP endured a heavy loss against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

For KKR, they are high on confidence with two consecutive wins at home, first against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and the next game against DD. They are a strong team and have moved another inch closer to the play-offs after a win against the JP Duminy led DD. The batting looks quite good with openers Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa providing a good platform for the middle-order to breed. Yusuf Pathan looks to be in good nick while Andre Russell’s power-hitting makes the team a strong batting unit.

In the bowling department, Umesh Yadav again did a fantastic job and saw Russell’s aid from the other end. Piyush Chawla just ran over the DD side by scalping four wickets. Brad Hogg has been lethal as usual while mystery magician Sunil Narine returned but couldn’t do much wonders.

KXIP on the other hand are virtually out of the tournament. As they have nothing to lose, George Bailey’s side will look to cause damage by looking to spoil others’ party and play for pride. The team has not clicked as a unit. Glenn Maxwell and David Miller have not replicated the fine form they had the previous year whereas Murali Vijay and Virender Sehwag’s dismal run at the top continues.

The bowling has seen some positives in form of Sandeep Sharma and Anureet Singh.  Axar Patel is not getting the right rhythm while Mitchell Johnson is having a nightmarish IPL season. The bowling department might not have recovered from the Chris Gayle scare that they faced on Wednesday night. It is time for the management to rope in Beuran Hendricks for Johnson and give Shardul Thakur another chance.

With the match at Kolkata, KKR are the clear favourites to win this contest with spinners expected to excel against the down and out opposition.
