True characters add colours to the sport and one such character was Australian fast bowler Merv Hughes. He wasn’t just about the towering built and intimidating walrus moustache. It was difficult for him to keep his mouth in check as he never lost an opportunity to have a go at the batsman.
As far sledging is concerned the big Australian was the perfect template and there was no stopping him on the field of play.
During the second Test of Ashes in 1989 at Lord’s, Hughes ran into the English batsman Robin Smith and told him, “You can’t f****** bat.”
However, Smith was quick to reply, “Hey Merv. We make a fine pair. I can’t f****** bat and you can’t f****** bowl.”
