It has been quite an emotional time for Sri Lankan cricket. Mahela Jayawardene has played his last game in the island nation, whereas Kumar Sangakkara may only feature in Tests after the ICC World Cup 2015. The doyens of Sri Lankan cricket now head down under to fulfill the dreams of a nation — one that has formed a very emotional bond with the illustrious duo. During their final One-Day International (ODI) on home soil, fans expected the duo to address their fans. Instead, only Jayawardene spoke at the post match presentation as Sangakkara had to walk away.
Russel Arnold, the former Sri Lankan cricket, has come under fire for Sangakkara not getting a chance to speak at the presentation. He invited both men to the platform and handed the stage to Jayawardene. However, he then immediately called for the Sri Lankan team to collect their trophy. Sangakkara had to then make his way without saying anything. An uproar ensued on Twitter.
Arnold took to Twitter to clarify his stand. He claimed that since Sangakkara spoke during the previous game in Pallekele, he wasn’t called to do so here. He also apologised to the Sangakkara fans.
But on Christmas Eve, his tweet surprised many as he expressed, “In my letter to Santa I included that Sanga be miked up all the time so those interested can listen to him.. even when speaking to his wife.”
