Rio Olympics 2016: Medal Tally

Being organised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the 2016 Olympics will witness more than 11,000 athletes from 206 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) compete for 306 sets of medals in 28 sporting events.

The Olympic games have a rich history and a legacy that has stood the test of time. Right from the ancient Olympics, which were held as early as the eighth century BC, to the modern day games, the premier sporting event has evolved a lot. Played every four years, this year’s edition is officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad and commonly known as Rio 2016.

Being organised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the 2016 Olympics will witness more than 11,000 athletes from 206 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) compete for 306 sets of medals in 28 sporting events. An 83-member Indian contingent too is a part of the games and is competing in the sporting spectacle which will go on till August 21.

India’s best ever performance came in London Olympics in 2012, where the country won six medals (2 Silver and 4 Bronze). The likes of Vijay Kumar, Sushil Kumar, MC Mary Kom, Saina Nehwal, Yogeshwar Dutt and Gagan Narang made the country proud with their effort. As time goes by, we will see new heroes emerge and the old ones battle it out for reputation. Here’s the medal tally for Rio 2016. (Updated as on August 20)
