New Zealand cricket legend Martin Crowe, widely regarded as country’s greatest batsman passed away on Thursday in Auckland surrounded by family. In September 2014, he was diagnosed with terminal double-hit lymphoma, a rare form of blood cancer. He made a presence in ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 final, hoping for a New Zealand victory. The news of his death caused a lot of grief to the cricket fraternity and even beyond. Martin Crowe: 14 facts about the New Zealand batting great
Crowe enjoyed a successful international career from 1982 to 1995. He led New Zealand to the semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 1992. He ended his career with a Test average of 45.36 and highest score of 299. Having notched up 17 hundreds, he still holds the record for the most hundreds.
Crowe was not just a cricket great but a visionary. Post his retirement he devised a new ultra-short form of the game called Cricket Max for his new employer Sky Television, and that can be regarded as the predecessor of Twenty20 cricket. He was a fine writer and analyst, and mentored current New Zealand stars Ross Taylor and Martin Guptill. He was an ICC Hall of Fame inductee.
A first cousin of Crowe, Hollywood superstar Russell Crowe also paid his tribute with a tweet. Both shared a wonderful camaraderie. On this tragic occasion, we present you some tweets from the cricket fraternity:
