Sachin Tendulkar has been an inspiration to a generation of growing up cricketers. Many of the current Indian cricketers have taken up the sport watching Tendulkar’s exploits in 1990s and 2000s. One such aspiring kid was Virat Kohli. The 27-year-old Indian superstar, once again played a matured knock of 55 to guide India home against arch-rival Pakistan in the crucial ICC World T20 2016 tie at Eden Garden’s in Kolkata.
India were 23 for three in the fifth over but Kohli, not for the first time shepherded his side to another memorable win. The iconic stadium was filled with several luminaries like Tendulkar, Amitabh Bachchan, Imran Khan, Sourav Ganguly and others, added to the likes of Virender Sehwag, Wasim Akram, Sunil Gavaskar, Brett Lee , etc. in the commentary box.
The moment Kohli reached his fifty, he waved his bat to Tendulkar in the stands and bowed to him. In the post match interview with the broadcaster, Kohli was asked about the moment and he elaborated.
“I have watched him [Tendulkar] do this for India as a child and now to do this in front of him and 90,000 people in a tournament like this against Pakistan; it is a special feeling which cannot be described. He was happy and cheering for India. The feeling is just not describable,” Kohli said.
Truly, it was a heart-warming moment for any Indian cricket fan. Tendulkar means much more than his massive stats to Indian cricket, Kohli just seems to take the legacy forward.
