Virat Kohli set to lose race against Sakshi Malik, PV Sindu for Khel Ratna award

From Indian cricket, only Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni have won this award since the inception.

After some good performances by Indian Olympians at Rio Olympics 2016, the medal winners are expected to receive Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, the highest sporting honour for an Indian sportsperson, in place of Indian Test captain Virat Kohli. The award, which is given to sportspersons for their spectacular achievements and performances with the cash amount of INR 7.5 Lakh, is India’s highest sports award.

Since it is an Olympic year and it has already been decided that during Olympics, the medal winners will automatically become the recipients of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, Kohli is likely to lose the race to wrestler Sakshi Malik and shuttler PV Sindhu, who have ensured medals for India. From Indian cricket, only Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni have won this award since the inception. On March 2016, Kohli was recommended for this award after stupendous last four years. His deputy Ajinkya Rahane is also in the line for another honour and has been nominated for Arjuna award.
