Phil Hughes is still in everyone’s memory and it was just last week, when his Australian team-mates bid him a teary goodbye. However, that didn’t stop Mitchell Johnson from welcoming Virat Kohli to the crease with a brilliant bouncer.
Kohli was stunned, and the Australians gravely concerned, but that didn’t stop both the teams continuing to play competitive cricket.
Kohli led from the front with a gritty hundred as India responded strongly to Australia’s big first innings total of 517 for seven in the opening Test at Adelaide.
Kohli brought up his second hundred at the venue, and joined the club of Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar and Dilip Vengsarkar, as the fourth Indian to score a hundred on captaincy debut.
Kohli was finally dismissed by Johnson for 115, with India at 367 for five.
