Yuvraj Singh, Axar Patel, Kings XI Punjab, May 1 and hat-tricks!

May 1 is celebrated around the world for various reasons. It also happens to be the Gujarat Day. It was not a happy Gujarat Day for the state-based Indian Premier League (IPL) side, Gujarat Lions (GL) on May 1, 2016, as they crashed to a defeat against the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), who are lying at the bottom of the table. Nevertheless, one Gujarati did make it count. Axar Patel entered the record books by claiming an IPL hat-trick. In doing so, he became the second cricketer from KXIP, to bag a hat-trick with first being Yuvraj Singh in 2009.

Yuvraj achieved the feat twice in the 2009 edition. First, against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and his second one came against Deccan Chargers (DC). The 2009 edition was held in South Africa. Co-incidentally, it was on May 1, 2009 when Yuvraj first claimed the hat-trick and he picked up the wickets of Robin Uthappa, Jacques Kallis and Mark Boucher. Despite Yuvi’s heroics, RCB went on to win the game.

Exactly, seven years since that day, Axar accounted for the wickets of Dinesh Karthik, Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja to bowl the struggling KXIP to a win. Another co-incidence, both Axar and Yuvraj are all-rounders, who bat left-handed and bowl left-arm orthodox.
