Bangladesh registered a 28-run victory over Zimbabwe in the first ODI at Dhaka to extend the visitors’ winless streak in the format to 11 games. Bangladesh, batting first were propelled to a total to 271 for 8 on the back of a century by Imrul Kayes. Zimbabwe’s Kyle Jarvis and Tendai Chatara had bowled magnificently to restrict Bangladesh to 6 for 139 before the batsman struck a career-best 144 to revive the innings.

In reply, Zimbabwe produced another sorry batting display, and despite a half-century from Sean Williams and a 35-run cameo at Cephas Zhuwao, the rest of the batsmen couldn’t get a move on. The opener watchfully took Zimbabwe to 47 in seven overs before Mustafizur Rahman provided the breakthrough for Bangladesh. Hopes were then pinned on the two pillars of Zimbabwe’s batting – Brendan Taylor and Sikandar Raza – but once Nazmul Islam removed both in quick succession, it rang alarm bells for Zimbabwe. A needless run out of skipper Hamilton Masakadza didn’t help either.

It was then the turn of Mehidy Hasan to make an impact in the game. He took out the next three batsmen – Craig Ervine, Peter Moore and Brandon Mavuta to leave Zimbabwe in tatters at 169 for eight in 40 overs before Williams got together with Jarvis and resisted to put on a 67-run stand. After his exploits with the ball, Jarvis chipped in with a defiant but valiant 37. But the partnership came a bit too late as all it could do was save Zimbabwe from not lasting 50 overs.

The star of the match was Kayes, who dominated with the bat and bailed Bangladesh out from the verge of getting bundled out. The new-ball pair of Chatara and Jarvis broke the back of Bangladesh middle order, combining to take seven wickets. But Kayes was not to be held back. In the company of Mohammad Mithun, who contributed a valuable 37 off 40 deliveries, the left-handed batsman took full control once wickets started falling at the other end.

There was a period when Bangladesh went eight overs without scoring a boundary before Kayes broke the shackles to provide the team a move on. Shortly after bringing up his century, Kayes took Bangladesh over the 200-run mark. Then, with seven overs left, the opener switched gears. Zimbabwe’s two best bowlers – Jarvis and Chatara were taken for 36 in two overs and was aided by Mohammad Saifuddin, who scored 50 off 69 balls with three boundaries and one six. Six short of his 150, Jarvis dismissed him to register his career-best figures.

Brief scores: Bangladesh 271/8 in 50 overs (Imrul Kayes 144, Saifuddin 50; Kyle Jarvis 4-37, Tendai Chatara 3-55) beat Zimbabwe 243/9 in 50 overs (Sean Williams 50*, Kyle Jarvis 37; Mehidy Hasan 3-46, Nazmul Islam 2-38) by 28 runs.
