Zimbabwe were able to attain a sizeable first innings lead over Bangladesh on the second day of the 1st Test at Sylhet on Sunday. Fast bowler Tendai Chatara and Sikandar Raza claimed three wickets each to bowl Bangladesh for 143, after Zimbabwe were dismissed for 282 in the morning session with Taijul Islam taking 6 for 108. At stumps, Zimbabwe were 1/0 in their second dig, ahead of the hosts by 139 runs.
Chatara claimed 3-19 and Raza grabbed 3-35. For Bangladesh, debutant Ariful Haque was the only batsman who offered some resistance with 41. The next best was 31 from wicketkeeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim. Bangladesh were in fact reduced to 19 for 4 before Mushfiqur revived them before falling to Kyle Jarvis, who finished with 2 for 28.
Zimbabwe made an early breakthrough in the fourth over when opener Imrul Kayes played a delivery from Chatara onto his stumps. Bangladesh then went on to lose the next three wickets in a span of nine deliveries. Liton Das offered a catch to Regis Chakabva before Zimbabwe successfully reviewed a caught behind appeal against Nazmul Hossain off Chatara. He then got rid of skipper Mahmudullah to leave Bangladesh in dire straits. It was then that Mushfiqur and Mominul Haque came together for a 30-run stand for the fifth wicket.
Raza sent back Mominul for 11, and it was followed by Mushfiqur’s dismissal first over after tea. Mehidy Hasan tried to fight with the tail but he could only score 21 as Zimbabwe were able to limit Bangladesh inside 150. This is the seventh consecutive occasion where Bangladesh have failed to score 200 or go past it.
Earlier, Taijul added four wickets to his overnight tally to remove the final five Zimbabwe wickets for 46 runs with Peter Moor remaining unbeaten on 63. Taijul struck after a hour’s play to provide Bangladesh their first wicket of the day, which triggered a slide. Moor and Chakabva had added 60 runs before catch by Nazmul held on to a brilliant catch at short leg.
Taijul then removed Wellington Masakadza Kyle Jarvis to complete his fourth five-wicket haul in Tests. Fellow left-arm spinner Nazmul Islam removed Brandon Mavuta and took the final wicket of Chatara. Moor, having scored his fourth Test fifty and first overseas brought up his fifty off 192 deliveries but was left stranded.
