Suranga Lakmal is in line to become only the second Sri Lankan pace bowler to play 50 Tests, after Chaminda Vaas, when the first Test against England gets underway in Galle on Tuesday.

Vaas is Sri Lanka’s most successful fast bowler, taking 355 wickets in 111 Test appearances between 1994 and 2009. Lakmal, 31, is already the second most capped Sri Lankan pacer with 49 matches.

Dilhara Fernando and Pramodya Wickramasinghe are behind him with 40 Test caps each.

In a Test career that began in 2010, Lakmal has claimed 117 wickets in 49 games at an average of 40.47 apiece. Only Vaas has more.

Lakmal was named Sri Lanka’s Test vice-captain at the start of the year, and crossed 100 wickets during the home series versus Bangladesh.
