England faced a four-wicket defeat to India in the ODI series opener in Nagpur on February 6. A batting collapse became the reason for England’s second loss within a week. The first loss was the 150-run T20I defeat to India in Mumbai.

England expected a strong performance, but they only posted 248 all-out. Phil Salt and Ben Duckett gave the team a solid start, as they reached 75/0 within 9 overs. This included an explosive display by Salt, where he scored 26 runs against Harshit Rana.

However, the batting later unfolded as the team lost three wickets in quick succession. Only Jos Buttler and Jacob Bethell managed to post decent numbers ad score half-centuries each.

During the post-match conference, Jos Buttler admitted that England batters might have added 40-50 more runs to the team total with the way that the wicket had played towards the end.

Disappointed not to win the game. We got off to a fantastic start in the powerplay but we lost wickets. Another 40-50 runs could have been handy with the way the wicket played towards the end. The guys started really well. The game was in the balance at that point, but credit to Shreyas Iyer to build that partnership. We have to play better for longer,” Buttler said after the match.
