New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday questioned the Centre over what it dubbed the “absurd appointments” made to leading institutes/institutions in the country, saying former cricketer Chetan Chauhan’s appointment as NIFT chairman proved its contention. The AAP also accused the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government of harming the reputation of the premier institutes/institutions by appointing “non-deserving candidates” to top posts. “The Modi government is trying to make absurd appointments in premier institutes/institutions. Chetan Chauhan’s appointment as the new chairman of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) proves it,” AAP leader Raghav Chadha said. Chauhan was rewarded with the post for shielding Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the DDCA controversy, he said. Chadha said the former cricketer had nothing to do with fashion and claimed his appointment was done “illegally”. On being appointed as the chairman, he thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah and said that he had already held “a few informal meetings” at his new office. Chauhan also mentioned, he will take charge of the position from Monday. He credits the appointment for his cricketing career and banking experience. But twitter took it the other way round and found reason to troll him. There were various reactions pouring in after the news broke out on Saturday morning. On appointment, Chauhan said, “I will spend 60 per cent of the time in DDCA, 20 per cent at NIFT and 20 per cent in my business.” ALSO READ: DDCA vice-president Chetan Chauhan’s statement recorded against Arvind Kejriwal
According to the NIFT Act 2006, the chairperson of the Board of Governors (BoG) is expected to be “an eminent academician, scientist or technologist or professional, to be nominated by the Visitor” of the institute, which is the President.
