Former Australia pacer Geoff Lawson on Monday said that England have relied on technology to find the weakness of the Australians in the ongoing Ashes series and due to the lack of Plan B, their strategies have misfired.

Lawson wrote in the Sydney Morning Herald, “Michael Clarke has a weakness against balls aimed at his left jugular and he, like Trott, has been burning out the motors on the SCG bowling machines with the setting on nasty pace and nastier length.”

“England’s singular tactic when Clarke came to the wicket on Saturday showed just how much captains rely on tactics determined in front of a laptop rather than on the greensward. Clarke’s response was emphatic and begged the need for plan B by England,” he added.

However, he feels that technology was put to good use by the Australians as they set an innovative field to Kevin Pietersen.

“Australia’s field placement for Kevin Pietersen was well considered but KP batted like the short mid-wicket was invisible, such is his consideration of any attempt to gain a mental edge over him,” Lawson wrote.

“Hopefully for Australia, Pietersen will consider his dismissal ill fortune rather than the result of a cunning plan and continue to hit though the line rather than give length any credit,” he said.
