Australia went into tea on Day Four of the fourth Test at Sydney at 32 for one. Australia had earlier bowled India out for 475, taking a 97-run lead. They lost the wicket of David Warner early in the innings as tea approached. Australia lead by 135 runs at tea.
India began the session with Ravichandran Ashwin and Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the middle. They battled hard in the middle and scored runs at a decent rate to chip away at the Australian total. Bhuvneshwar had started off slowly before lunch but picked up pace thereafter. He had moved to 30 when he edged one onto the ground and it bumped to the first slip. The umpire was consulted but he was given out.
Ashwin continued to bat solidly and went on to get his fourth Test fifty. This was also his second fifty at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Back in 2011-12 as well, he had managed a fifty. However, he was dismissed by Mitchell Starc when he edged one to the wicketkeeper. Mohammed Shami threw his bat around to help India reduce Australia’s lead to double figures. India were ultimately bowled out for 475.
Ashwin was in play soon as there was turn in the surface. In his very second over, he had Warner caught at first slip. Shane Watson survived a run-out as Wriddhiman Saha failed to collect cleanly. Australia have managed to score at a good rate but there is something in the surface that makes this an interesting contest heading into the evening session.
Brief scores:
Australia 572 for 7 decl. (Chris Rogers 95, David Warner 101, Steven Smith 117, Shane Watson 81; Shaun Marsh 73, Joe Burns 58; Mohammed Shami 5 for 112) and 38 for 1 (Chris Rogers 21*, SHane Watson 13*; Ravichandran Ashwin 1 for 21) lead India 475 (KL Rahul 110, Rohit Sharma 53, Virat Kohli 147, Ravichandran Ashwin 50; Mitchell Starc 3 for 106, Ryan Harris 2 for 96, Nathan Lyon 2 for 123, Shane Watson 2 for 58) by 135 runs.
