Domestic team-mates and Test hopefuls Joe Burns and Matt Renshaw failed to make the most of their chances for the Cricket Australia XI against Sri Lanka in Hobart, with both openers dismissed cheaply on day two of the day-night tour game.

The 14-Test batsman Burns, leading the CA XI, followed his score of 4 in the first innings by making 22 off 18 in the second, dismissed by Dushmantha Chameera. Renshaw, who played the last of his 11 Test matches in April during the controversial tour of South Africa, followed a score of 7 with 10 off 29 before he was lbw to Kasun Rajitha. (ALSO READ: Burns plays down competition with Queensland teammate Renshaw)

Burns and Renshaw were this month recalled to Australia’s Test squad to face Sri Lanka, with the axe falling on Aaron Finch, Peter Handscomb and the Marsh brothers, Shaun and Mitchell.
