Australia have named batsman Kurtis Patterson and fast bowler Jhye Richardson in their playing XI for the first Test in Gabba against Sri Lanka that starts from Thursday.

Patterson scored 157 and 102 for a Cricket Australia XI during a pink-ball match in Hobart recently. He packs an experience of 58 first-class matches in which he has scored 3813 runs at 41.00 with six centuries and 26 fifties.

While Patterson will be making his international debut, Richardson has already represented Australia in limited-overs cricket. In 11 first-class appearances, the right-arm pacer has 49 wickets at 23.24.

Australia and Sri Lanka will begin their two-Test series with a pink-ball Test in Perth.

While Matt Renshaw was overlooked, his Queensland team-mate Joe Burns has been recalled having last played a Test in April last year.

The Australians went into the Test series against India boasting one of the most formidable pace attacks in world cricket, but Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins were comprehensively out-bowled by their Indian counterparts. To make matters worse, the three pacemen failed to get a single lbw decision as India claimed a historic series win.

Hazlewood was subsequently ruled out of the series opener against Sri Lanka due to an abdominal strain.
