Dimuth Karunaratnec Tim Paine b Nathan Lyon 24 70 1 0 34.29
21.6
N Lyon to D Karunaratne, OUT! The Lyon roars! Turn and bounce for the GOAT and he gets his man! Brilliant! Spins this around off and moves away from Karunaratne. Draws him to play at it and then bounces sharply. Karunaratne can't do much than just feel for it. The ball brushes his gloves before settling into the mitts of Tim Paine. Good catch and a very important wicket for the Aussies. The southpaw has been in good form and could have tired the hosts.
Lahiru Thirimannec Marnus Labuschagne b Pat Cummins 12 30 1 0 40
10.2
Pat Cummins to L Thirimanne, OUT! First wicket of the game and it falls to Cummins. Full again and makes Thirimanne drive. Just like the last ball Lahiru goes after it. Nothing on the ball, it just straightens and takes the outside edge of the bat. Comes at a good height to Labuschagne who makes no mistake at third slip. Thirimanne never looked settled and now has to walk back. Not the best of return to Test cricket for him. Surprisingly, this opening stand of 26 is the joint best for Sri Lanka in Australia since 2007.
Dinesh Chandimal (C)c Joe Burns b Jhye Richardson 5 7 1 0 71.43
11.6
J Richardson to D Chandimal, OUT! First Test wicket for Jhye Richardson! He has probed so long and finally gets his reward. A long spell for him but it pays dividends. Length ball around off, forces Chandimal to poke at one more. He got an edge in the 3rd ball which didn't carry and also missed one in this over but not on this ball. Gets a healthy edge which flies to second slip. Joe Burns there dives to his left and takes a good low catch. Richardson pumps the air in delight and his teammates join him in celebration. The Sri Lankan skipper is out of here!
Kusal Mendisb Jhye Richardson 14 44 1 0 31.82
26.3
J Richardson to Mendis, OUT! TIMBER! Kusal Mendis departs! Whattaaaee ball from Jhye Richardson. Beauty of a delivery. It was pitched on middle, moved away a little after landing. Mendis looked to defend but get beaten as he just went to turn the bat face. The ball goes on to make an ugly sound as it crashes into top of middle and off. Sri Lanka lose their fourth wicket and Jhye strikes in the first over post the break.
Roshen Silvac Tim Paine b Pat Cummins 9 56 1 0 16.07
42.4
Pat Cummins to Silva, OUT! Take a bow, Pat! Was making Silva play and miss for some time now and gets his outside edge eventually. On a good length outside off, Silva with no feet movement pokes at it and gets an outside edge. Paine at the back takes another one and Sri Lanka lose another one. That's the sixth wicket before the score reaches 100 and are in big trouble.
Dhananjaya de Silvac Tim Paine b Jhye Richardson 5 17 0 0 29.41
32.3
J Richardson to Silva, OUT! EDGE AND TAKEN! Jhye Richardson at it again. Third wicket for him and the fifth for Australia. What a start he is having. Fuller ball around off, draws Dhananjaya into the drive and gets his outside edge. Paine behind takes a simple catch. Wonderful stuff from Richardson. Pinned Dhananjaya back from the last three overs and now gets his wicket with a full ball. Sri Lanka in trouble as half their side is back in the hut.
Niroshan Dickwella (W)c Kurtis Patterson b Pat Cummins 64 78 6 1 82.05
56.2
Pat Cummins to Dickwella, OUT! Dickwella falls at last. The short delivery does the trick. Around middle and leg, Niroshan looks to pull but it gets big on him. It lobs towards deep mid-wicket where Kurtis Patterson takes a comfortable catch. Brilliant innings under pressure. Australia are just one wicket away from wrapping up the innings. Cummins gets his third.
Dilruwan Pererac Marnus Labuschagne b Mitchell Starc 1 16 0 0 6.25
47.4
M Starc to Perera, OUT! Dilruwan Perera departs as well! Sri Lanka are folding up now. Starc has his tail up and is wrapping the Lankan one now. Wonderful delivery. On a fuller length outside off, Perera looks to drive but there is some late outswing. Hence, he gets a thick outside edge towards third slip where Marnus Labuschagne takes another one. His third.
Suranga Lakmalc Marnus Labuschagne b Mitchell Starc 7 4 1 0 175
45.4
M Starc to S Lakmal, OUT! Suranga Lakmal departs! Mitchell Starc gets his first wicket. 200th wicket for him. Good delivery from Starc. Full on off, Lakmal looks to defend but the ball moves away late. The batsman gets an outside edge towards third slip where Marnus Labuschagne takes a very good catch inches above the ground. Sri Lanka are seven down.
Dushmantha Chameerac Kurtis Patterson b Pat Cummins 0 20 0 0 0
56.4
Pat Cummins to Chameera, OUT! Chameera is the last man dismissed. Cummins gets his 4th of the innings. Once again shorter in length, Chameera tries to pull that one away but gets a top edge. The ball goes high in the air and to the fielder at gully. Kurtis Patterson there takes his second catch in the same over. Dushmantha Chameera's resilient innings comes to an end. Scored no runs but gave plenty of support to Dickwella in their 38-run stand. SRI LANKA ARE BOWLED OUT FOR 144.

Marcus Harrisc Lahiru Thirimanne b Lahiru Kumara 44 88 6 0 50
25.6
L Kumara to Harris, OUT! Caught next ball! Oh wow. This is so, so lucky for Sri Lanka. Bad ball, but a wicket! Short and outside off, Harris latches on to the cut shot and hits it well too. But finds Lahiru Thirimanne at point to perfection! All that watchfulness last evening has come to naught. Harris started on 40 this morning. This is a nice lesson for him to understand that every day, every session, every mini-session and every time you start after a break, you start on 0. Australia trail by 68, Sri Lanka hunting for 7 more wickets.
Joe Burnsc Kusal Mendis b Suranga Lakmal 15 30 3 0 50
10.3
S Lakmal to Joe Burns, OUT! First breakthrough for Sri Lanka. Good shape and swing on this one. Full on off, Burns is drawn forward and looks to defend but gets a thick outside edge due to the away movement. The ball flies towards second slip where Kusal Mendis dives to his left and takes a good catch. Sri Lanka finally get rid of the quickfire opening stand.
Usman Khawajab Dilruwan Perera 11 29 1 0 37.93
22.1
D Perera to Khawaja, OUT! Dragged on! With minutes to go to bed, a wicket has fallen. Perera gets his first wicket on the first ball of his new spell. Timely wicket for Sri Lanka. Short delivery on off, Khawaja looks to cut but gets an inside edge and drags it onto the stumps. He was struggling with his timing today and he paid the price for it. Australia trail by 72 runs.
Nathan Lyonc Kusal Mendis b Suranga Lakmal 1 23 0 0 4.35
28.4
S Lakmal to N Lyon, OUT! The ball has carried and Lyon has to go! Second wicket in the space of 17 balls this morning. Australia have lost 3/10 in the span of 40 deliveries, if you add Khawaja's dismissal last night. Lovely delivery, full and around off, Nathan looked to defend. However, the away movement consumed him. A thick outside edge was induced which went towards second slip. It was dipping and Kusal Mendis had to dive forward. But he took it cleanly or rather, let us put it this way - he was confident that he had taken it. Lyon was going nowhere though. He wanted it to be checked and the umpires obliged. Not quite sure what the soft signal was but does not matter. One look in the replays was enough to take the right decision. O. U. T. Australia still trail by 62. Can Sri Lanka start thinking about the lead now?
Marnus Labuschagnec Lahiru Thirimanne b Dhananjaya de Silva 81 150 3 0 54
78.1
D Perera to Labuschagne, OUT! Soft, softer, softest dismissal! Labuschagne cannot believe it. The crowd is stunned. Now it realizes. Starts to applaud the youngster's effort. He has missed out on a deserving hundred. Out of nowhere, Sri Lanka have picked up a wicket, with the new ball just 1.5 overs away. Full and around off, Marnus comes down the track and looks to chip it to the on side. Unfortunately for him, it goes straight to silly mid on where Lahiru Thirimanne does the formalities. Such a shame for the Aussie lad. He was looking so good. Now he is looking distraught. The 166-run stand is broken.
Travis Headlbw b Suranga Lakmal 84 187 10 0 44.92
89.5
Lakmal to Head, OUT! It's high but not high enough to miss the top of leg stump. It's clipping and umpire's call stays! Head has to walk back and he will feel that he missed out on a golden opportunity to get his maiden Test hundred. Lakmal with his third wicket here. He bowls a good length ball on off and it nips back in after hitting the deck. Head strides ahead and across to flick it across the line but misses and is trapped on the pads. They appeal and the finger goes up. Head takes the DRS thinking that it hit him high on the knee-roll but the replays roll in to disappoint him. End of a scratchy knock by Travis but he gusted out there and deserved the three-digit score.
Kurtis Pattersonlbw b Suranga Lakmal 30 82 3 0 36.59
103.4
S Lakmal to Patterson, OUT! Plumb in front! No help from the technology for the debutant. A Test fifer for Lakmal, his third overall. Another inswinger from him to hunt down a batsman. He lands it on a length around middle and the ball nips back in off the seam. Patterson is caught napping inside the crease with his footwork, tries playing it straight but it shapes back in to rap him on the pads. The finger goes up as soon as the appeal is made. Kurtis takes the DRS but the replays show that it has hit him in line and is going on to disturb the leg pole. A knock of 30 but the young man showed good promise.
Tim Paine (C)(W)c Kusal Mendis b Suranga Lakmal 0 1 0 0 0
89.6
S Lakmal to Paine, OUT! The catch is fine and Tim Paine bags a golden duck. What a ball to get first up! A peach by Lakmal. He dishes out a back of a length ball around off and gets it to swerve away and Paine is caught on the back foot flirting inside the line. He gets squared up completely and the extra bounce catches the outside edge. It's dying in front of second slip but Mendis does well to go down low and snap it inches above the surface. He is running in celebration and the umpire has referred it upstairs. It's a clean catch in the replays and Paine has to depart. Kusal took a similar catch earlier in the day. Superb effort!
Pat Cumminsc Niroshan Dickwella b Dushmantha Chameera 0 21 0 0 0
97.5
D Chameera to Cummins, OUT! This one was always on the cards. A 21-ball duck for Pat Cummins. This delivery is really unplayable. Chameera has bowled a gem here. Bowls a length ball in the line of the stumps and gets it to move away a hint on pitching. Cummins tries playing the line but it takes a thick outside edge. Dickwella makes no mistake behind the stumps and the struggle is over for Pat. Australia lead by 134 runs.
Mitchell Starcnot out 26 25 4 1 104
Jhye Richardsonc Dimuth Karunaratne b Dilruwan Perera 1 7 0 0 14.29
106.2
D Perera to Richardson, OUT! The last wicket falls! A bit like the last ball but this time Richardson has chipped it in the air. Flighted one on off, Jhye skips down the track and tries playing across the line. But it catches the leading edge and loops in the air. Karunaratne moves across to his left from covers and takes a tumbling catch. Australia all out for 323!

5.6
Pat Cummins to D Karunaratne, OUT! Caught behind! A wicket does fall in the small passage of play! Guess who gets it. Guess who gets it? Not Starc. But that warhorse Pat Cummins. What a beautiful set up in this over. Mixing his lengths, then the lines. Got the ball to come back in and then move away. The last one came back in, this one moved away. Karunaratne was not sure whether to play at that or not and had a push. Got the nick. End of story as Tim Paine did the rest. STUMPS ON DAY 2, SRI LANKA TRAIL BY 162!
Lahiru Thirimannec Tim Paine b Pat Cummins 32 98 1 0 32.65
33.3
Pat Cummins to Thirimanne, OUT! Bizarre! The third umpire asks the umpire to stay with the original decision. What has happened here? The Snicko has shown a turbulence but in a frame that is after the ball passes the bat. It is the fifth wicket for Cummins, the fourth time in Tests. A length ball outside off and shapes away slightly, Thirimanne was ahead to defend but the ball straightens and there is a noise as the ball passes the bat and goes to Tim Paine. An immediate celebration from the fielders and the bowlers and the umpire agrees too. Lahiru was surprised and immediately goes upstairs. The replays roll in, there is nothing on Hotspot and we go to the Snickometer. The line remains straight as the ball passes the outside edge but there is a slight turbulence once it is past the willow. The third umpire feels that the frame was a little behind and suggests it is a faint edge. Asks the on-field umpire to remain with his original decision. Thirimanne cannot believe it but he has to go. His dogged resistance comes to an end. The Lankans are still 100 runs behind with only 4 wickets left.
Dinesh Chandimal (C)c Kurtis Patterson b Pat Cummins 0 2 0 0 0
7.2
Cummins to Chandimal, OUT! Brute of a delivery! Off the top of the bat and to Kurtis Patterson at gully. Chandimal bags a duck. A length ball on off stump and it rises too much suddenly, the ball has too much spice and Chandimal tries to defend it on the off side but to his dismay, the ball takes the shoulder of the bat and lobs up towards gully. Patterson jumps and takes a good catch. Two wickets in the space of 3 balls for Cummins, lovely bowling! Sri Lanka have lost their second and this is a very early blow.
Kusal Mendisc Joe Burns b Pat Cummins 1 7 0 0 14.29
9.1
Pat Cummins to K Mendis, OUT! Poor from Mendis! Really poor. A fuller length ball outside off and after missing two balls from Cummins in the previous over, this one takes the outside edge and it goes to Joe Burns at second slip at a good height. He is not dropping those. Cummins is elated and why not, he has three now in three overs. Australia have started off brilliantly here but this is not very good stuff from SL. Need to show some fight!
Roshen Silvac Joe Burns b Pat Cummins 3 22 0 0 13.64
17.6
Pat Cummins to Silva, OUT! Gone! Cummins has four! What a brilliant spell this is. Consistently pegging at a line outside off and gets his reward. This one is slightly full outside off and shaping away, Silva is drawn into the cover drive and he gets an outside edge that flies to the region between the first and second slip. Joe Burns though, comes ahead and slightly to his left and pouches this one safely. Sri Lanka in all sorts of trouble here. Cummins currently has 4 wickets for 9 runs. Outstanding stuff!
Dhananjaya de Silvab Jhye Richardson 14 46 0 0 30.43
30.6
Richardson to de Silva, OUT! Timberrrrr! Massive blow from Jhye Richardson. Surprises Dhananjaya with a yorker. Had been bowling all the balls outside off till now and then goes wide of the crease this time and yorks de Silva. The right-hander could not keep this ball out as the bat did not come down in time. Pegs back the off pole of Dhananjaya. Right before a break as well, could be crushing for the Lankans. Half their side back in the hut now.
Niroshan Dickwella (W)c Marcus Harris b Jhye Richardson 24 39 4 0 61.54
42.6
Richardson to N Dickwella, OUT! What a brilliant catch by Marcus Harris. Good stuff by Richardson, bowling to the plan. Short of a length delivery, Dickwella looks to pull over square leg but finds Marcus Harris at backward square leg who goes to his left and jumps and pulls off a stunner. Niroshan seems to suggest that he did not see that fielder but the fact is that he has been there for quite some time. He will have to leave and Sri Lanka still trail by 70 runs. Second wicket for Jhye Richardson. What a debut this boy is having. Australia closing in on what could be a victory with an innings.
Dilruwan Pererac Kurtis Patterson b Pat Cummins 8 34 0 0 23.53
44.5
Pat Cummins to D Perera, OUT! If the last catch was a stunner, this is even more brilliant. Superman stuff from Patterson at gully. A length ball on off, extra bounce and catches the shoulder of the bat and flies to the right of gully. Surely was looking like it was going away from the fielder but Kurtis leaps to his right and holds on for a one-handed blinder. Eight down now! Sri Lanka might not even make Australia bat again here it looks like. Cummins picks up his sixth one of the innings and the tenth of his game.
Suranga Lakmalst Tim Paine b Nathan Lyon 24 30 3 0 80
50.5
N Lyon to Lakmal, OUT! It is all over here at the 'Gabba. Lahiru Kumara is not going to come out to bat and hence, that is the end of the Test match. AUSTRALIA HAVE WON BY AN INNINGS AND 40 RUNS, LEAD 1-0 IN THE TWO-MATCH SERIES. Coming to the last wicket, it was a flighted ball on middle and turning in, Lakmal could not resist and comes down the ground looking to smash it into oblivion but misses the ball and Paine completes an easy stumping. A fitting way for the inspirational skipper of Australia to end the game. He took over in tough times and this victory would mean a lot after the series loss to India. Pulls up all the teammates in a huddle and gives a pep talk before they walk off the field all smiles.
