Pakistan star batter Babar Azam made history by becoming the joint-fastest player to reach 6,000 runs in one-day cricket. He achieved this milestone with his knock of 29 during the final ODI of the tri-series against New Zealand in Karachi.
Opening alongside left-handed batter Fakhar Zaman, Babar had a slow start but gradually started finding his feet. Come the seventh over, he drove a full delivery from Jacob Duffy through the covers to reach the 6,000-run mark.
With this, he equaled South African great Hashim Amla’s record, accomplishing the feat in just 123 innings. He also became the fastest Asian to reach this milestone, thus surpassing star India batter Virat Kohli, who took 136 innings to reach the same number of runs in ODIs.
Previously Babar had also set the record for the fastest 5,000 ODI runs in May 2023 in just 97 matches. However, since then, his form has taken a hit. In his last seven innings, he has managed only two fifty-plus scores.

The ongoing tri-series, seen as key preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy starting on February 19, hasn’t been favorable for Babar, who has only managed to play innings of 10 and 23 in Pakistan’s first 2 matches held against New Zealand and South Africa respectively.
