Bangladesh batsman Mosaddek Hossain is in trouble after being accused of torture by his wife for dowry and forcing her out of the house.

According to various media reports, Mosaddek was demanding 1 million taka (USD 12,003) dowry from his wife Sharmin Samira Usha whom he got married to six years ago. The charges, leveled by Usha, were admitted by additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Rosina Khan on Sunday who then ordered the Sadar Upazila executive officer to investigate the case.

Usha’s lawyer Rezaul Karim Dulal has claimed that Mosaddek has been demanding the dowry for a long time and forced her out of his home earlier this month. “He (Mosaddek) tortured her and drove her out of home for 1 million taka (USD 12,003) in dowry on August 15,” he was quoted as saying by PTI.

However, Mosaddek’s family has denied the allegations saying Usha has been spreading false information after being sent a divorce letter on August 15. She demanded more money than what was agreed on marriage documents and when it was denied, she began misleading people. “They have been in disagreement since they married,” the cricketer’s brother Mosabber Hossain Moon was quoted as saying. “She has started the case after spreading false and misleading information as she did not get the money.”

Mosaddek, a middle order batsman, has so far played in 21 ODIs, scoring 302 runs with one half-century apart from picking up 10 wickets with his offbreaks. He has also played in two T20Is as well. He has been included in Bangladesh’s squad for the Asia Cup to be held next month in the UAE.
