The first day of the Test saw the bowlers from both sides dominate. First, the South African pace duo of Wiaan Mulder and Kagiso Rabada shattered the Bangladesh batting order by taking 3 wickets each. Spinner Keshav Maharaj would also chip in with 3 more wickets as Bangladesh got bundled out for 106, their 5th lowest Test total on home soil.

In reply, the proteas also struggled against Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud and left-arm spinner Taijul Islam. The latter ended the day with a 5-wicket haul which restricted the visitors to 140/6 at the end of the day. Though South Africa carry a 34-run lead to the second day, the Bangladesh bowling attack will be trying their best to not let them take a lead of over 100 runs.
