Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan made an impressive start to the Big Bash League 2018-19 season picking up three wickets to help defending champions Adelaide Strikers to a five-wicket victory against Brisbane Heat on Wednesday.

Put into bat, the Strikers lost the dangerous Brendon McCullum for four off Billy Stanlake. Chris Lynn’s belligerent 20-ball 33 after he mistimed a shot to give Michael Nesser a simple catch at long-on off Peter Siddle.

Rashid then got into the act as he accounted for the wickets for Ben Cutting (8) and sent Mark Steketee and Mitchell Swepson without troubling the scorers. Brisbane Heat folded for 146 in 19.4 overs.

While Rashid picked 3/19 in his four overs, Stanlake and Matthew Short claimed two wickets each.

In reply, opener Alex Carey top-scored with a 70-run knock as Adelaide Strikers chased down the target with five wickets in hand and five balls to spare. Adelaide Strikers had defeated Hobart Hurricanes by 25 runs to win their first title in the BBL 2017-18.
