Chennai Super Kings won the inaugural IPL 2011 match by three runs against Kolkata Knight Riders at the M Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Manoj Tiwary hit Suraj Randiv for two sixes, bringing Kolkata Knight Riders back into the game. Kolkata reached 146 for five from 19 overs, and need a further 9 runs off the last over.
In pursuit of 154, Kolkata floundered after a solid opening stand. Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s brilliant piece of fielding sent Yusuf Pathan back to the pavilion and Jacques Kallis fell after a well-made half century. Kolkata skipper Gautam Gambhir was runout for 1 while Eoin Morgan stumped for 6.
Shadab Jakati struck in the ninth over to remove Manvinder Bisla, after he and Jacques Kallis added 64 for the first wicket. Bisla was stumped by MS Dhoni for 27.
Kolkata made a brisk start as Bisla played the anchor’s role and Kallis went after the bowlers. The South Africa batsmen attacked Chennai’s new paceman Tim Southee, hitting him for three consecutive boundaries in the fourth over.
Earlier, Anirudh Srikkanth’s 64 and some late hitting by Albie Morkel helped Chennai Super Kings to set a target of 154 for Kolkata Knight Riders to win in the first game of Indian Premier League 2011.
Brief Scores: CSK 153 for 4 in 20 overs (Anirudha Srikanth 64, Suresh Raina 33; Yusuf Pathan 1 for 19, Iqbal Abdulla 1 for 26, Jacques 2 for 34) vs KKR 121 for 5 in 17 overs (Jacques Kallis 54; Shadab Jakati 1 for 23)
