September 9, 2016, marks the day when legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Tillakaratne Dilshan bids farewell from all forms of international cricket after playing his career’s last Twenty20 International (T20I) against Australia at home. However, Dilshan’s farewell game was turning out to be another one-sided encounter but things changed in the second innings and a thriller was witnessed. Batting first, Sri Lanka once again could not get a desirable start with Dilshan getting out for one in his ultimate match and it was followed by regular fall of wickets from the other end. Pacer, John Hashtings got Dilshan’s wicket in this match.
Further, wickets kept falling at regular intervals but Dhananjaya de Silva kept scoring runs from the other end. He made a very good 50-ball 62 run knock, which is almost half the runs scored by his team. In the end, Sri Lanka somehow managed to play out 20-overs and posted 128 runs with the loss of nine wickets.

James Faulkner and spinner Adam Zampa bowled exceptionally well and accounted for three wickets each. Opener Glenn Maxwell hiwed no mercy to the Lankan bowlers and smashed 66 runs off 29 deliveries, which included seven boundaries and four sixes. After the fall of Maxwell’s wicket in the ninth over at the score of 93, Australia needed only 36 runs but that looked like a big score as Lankan bowlers started chipping wickets and soon they were four wicket down for 99.
Dilshan also picked two crucial wickets and bowled economically. As Australia were moving towards their target, they lost two more wickets but somehow they managed the seal the game by four wickets.
Once again, another Sri Lankan legend ended his career on a low as the game was lost. In this decade, four Sri Lankan legendary cricketers retired from the game but didn’t get a winning farewell. Sanath Jayasuriya, Muttiah Muralitharan, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara are those four legendary names. Dilshan made it o this list too.
Cricket fraternity conveyed their best wishes and hailed Dilshan for a magnificent career. Here are some of the tweets.
