South African fast bowler Dale Steyn  is heading home before the one-off T20I against Australia on Saturday, after being released to play in the inaugural Mzansi Super League.

Steyn bowled excellently during South Africa’s 2-1 ODI series win, taking seven wickets at an average of 13.42 and economy rate of 3.38 from 27 overs. He last played a T20I in March 2016.

The 35-year-old is injury-free and is expected to slot into his new T20 franchise Cape Town Blitz’s campaign as the Mzansi Super League begins later this week.

Blitz face AB de Villiers’ Tshwane Spartans at Newlands on Friday, but whether Steyn plays that game remains to be seen, given the time needed to travel from Australia to South Africa. The franchise’s second match is on Sunday versus Durban Heat.
