Born on October 21, 1971, Damein Martyn celebrates his 43rd birthday on Tuesday. The former Australia batsman, who retired amid the Ashes 2006-07, was considered to be one of the finest Australian batsmen in the first decade of the 21st century. He also distinguished himself as the one who could play spin attacks better than many of his contemporaries.
The right-handed batsman made his debut at the age of 21 against the West Indies in November 1992 at the Gabba in Brisbane. There was a controversy surrounding his innings in the second Test against South Africa at Sydney in 1993-94 series, as Martyn, who was at the crease for close to two hours, faced 59 balls and scored only six runs as Australia went on to lose the match by five runs.
Martyn was hence axed from the Australian Test side and it was only after seven years, in 2000, that he was drafted back into the team. Martyn played 67 Tests, 208 ODIs and four T20Is.
In Tests he scored 4,406 runs at an average of 46.37, hitting 13 tons and 23 half-centuries. He scored 5,346 runs in 208 ODIs, averaging 40.80, and smashing seven centuries and as many as 37 half-centuries.
