Bangladesh end the day on 152for 3 on Day Two of the second Test against England. Bangladesh as a result lead England by 92 runs. Imrul Kayes was the unbeaten batsman on 59 for the hosts, as Mahmudullah was dismissed off the final ball of the day, with Tamim scoring a quickfire 40. Zafar Ansari and Ben Stokes are the wicket-takers for England in this innings. Bangladesh had earlier bowled England out for 244, conceding a lead of 24 runs. Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid led England’s fightback and put on 99 for the ninth wicket to give England a slender lead. Woakes finished with 46, while Rashid carried his bat through and made an unbeaten 44. Joe Root had struck a gritty fifty earlier in the day. Off-spinner Mehedi Hasan was the pick of the Bangladeshi bowlers, finishing with six wickets for the second time in as many matches. Taijul Islam chipped in with three wickets as well. Skipper Mushfiqur Rahim largely depended on these two and Shakib-al-Hasan to do most of the bowling and all 10 wickets were shared among these three bowlers. Mushfiqur brought on other bowlers only the lunch break.
Bangladesh in their second innings got off to an excellent start. Openers Tamim Iqbal and Kayes put on 65 inside 13 overs, before Tamim fell for a 47-b1ll 40, giving Ansari his first international wicket. Ben Stokes in the very next over sent Mominul Haque packing for just 1. England were on the charge at that point and it seemed like Bangladesh batting would once again collapse, like it did in the first innings. But Mahmudullah and Kayes almost managed to play out the rest of the day without further damage, with rain threatening to play spoilsport once again. The duo added 86 runs for the third wicket so far and will look to increase the tally on Day Three. England recovered from being reduced to 144 to 8 to 244. Resuming the post-lunch session from 163 for 8, England managed to take a small lead, which could go a long way in determining the result of this match. Day Two began with England at 50 for 3, still trailing Bangladesh by 170 runs with Moeen Ali and Root at the crease. Moeen and Stokes were dismissed in the opening 30 minutes and England were on the back foot straight away. Root and Jonny Bairstow then put on 54 for the sixth wicket, which gave England some stability. England lost Ansari and Root in quick succession, which brought Rashid and Woakes together. Nobody at that point would have given England a chance to wipe off the deficit. They not only did that, but also took a small lead.
Bangladesh in their first innings made 220, after being 171 for 1 at one stage. Tamim scored a magnificent century and Mominul scored 66 as the duo put on 170 for the second wicket after Kayes was dismissed early. Moeen was the best bowler for England, picking up five wickets. Woakes and Stokes shared the other five wickets between them. They did a lot of damage as the ball got old, to get reverse swing into play. Bangladesh vs England 2nd Test: Photos
The play started a bit early today to make up for the lost overs as Day One was interrupted by rains. It was Bangladesh, who had won the toss and elected to bat first. England decided to rest Stuart Broad and Gareth Batty for this match. As a result, Steven Finn was roped in and England gave a debut to all-rounder Ansari. Despite undergoing an endoscopy, Sabbir Rahman was declared fit to play this match for Bangladesh, who got in Shuvagata Hom in place of Shaiful Islam. England lead the two-match series 1-1 after securing a narrow 22-run win in the first Test at Chittagong.
Bangladesh 220 (Tamim Iqbal 104 , Mominul Haque 66 ; Moeen Ali 5 for 57, Chris Woakes 3 for 30) & 152 for 3 (Tamim Iqbal 40, Imrul Kayes 59*, Mahmudullah 47; Zafar Ansari 2 for 33, Ben Stokes 1 for 20) lead England 224 ( Joe Root 56, Chris Woakes 46, Adil Rashid 44*; Mehedi Hasan 6 for 82, Taijul Islam 3 for 65) by 128 runs
