Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva continued accumulating more and more runs for Sri Lanka on Day Three, taking team’s score to 295 for 1 at lunch against Bangladesh. Since the wicket of Dimuth Karunaratne, Bangladesh have failed to taste further success as the duo piled on runs to nullify the pressure the hosts had put on them with a first-innings total of 513. Sri Lanka now trail by 218 runs, with de Silva (170) and Mendis (125) out in the middle.

The two batsmen toyed with the Bangladesh bowling, blunted by the absence of Shakib Al Hasan. De Silva posted the first 150-plus score of his Test career while Mendis played his perfect help from the other end. Mendis’ role was more of an anchor as de Silva looked destructive throughout his innings, hitting 21 fours and a six so far. De Silva also completed his 1,000 Test runs and became the joint-fastest Sri Lankan to do so, along with Roy Dias, taking 23 innings only. The de Silva-Mendis partnership is now the highest for any wicket for Sri Lanka in Bangladesh.

While the Bangladesh bowlers had produced a few half-chances and put some down on Thursday, there was barely a semblance of a chance on Friday. This only helped Mendis and de Silva to march their way onto the big total they have put on the board. Sri Lanka dominated the session, adding 108 runs without losing a wicket.

Brief scores:

Bangladesh 513 lead Sri Lanka 295 for 1 (Kusal Mendis 125*, Dhananjaya de Silva 170*; Mehedi Hasan 1 for 52) by 218 runs.
