Dinesh Karthik’s brilliant 112 ensured that Tamil Nadu beat Bengal by 37 runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2016-17 final at Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi. This is Tamil Nadu’s fifth title. But it was their bowlers Ashok Dinda and Mohammed Shami, who outplayed Tamil Nadu, sharing 7 wickets between them. Shami finished with 4 for 26, while Dinda registered figures of 3 for 36. Tamil Nadu were eventually bundled out for 217, with Karthik last man dismissed hit wicket for 112 off 120, with 14 boundaries punctuating his innings. In reply, Bengal never got going right from the beginning. They had lost a couple of wickets in the opening five overs of their innings. From there, they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were in deeper trouble when skipper Manoj Tiwary was dismissed for 32. Anustup Majumdar and Sudip Chatterjee added 65 for the sixth wicket, which kept Bengal in the game. But Tamil Nadu kept striking and in the end bowled Bengal out for just 180 inside 46 overs.
The 85-run stand between Karthik and Indrajith turned out to be the crucial phase for Tamil Nadu, as they managed to put up a modest score on the board. Tamil Nadu bowlers were right on the money from the beginning. They knew they need to bowl Bengal out to win this match and that is what they did eventually.
