Priyank Panchal made a commendable start to his Duleep Trophy season as he smashed an impressive 105. His ton allowed India Red to finish on a high on the opening day of the Duleep Trophy 2017-18 against India Green at the Ekana International Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Thursday. Sudip Chatterjee was the second-highest scorer of the day, with 52. It was a tough day for the India Green bowlers, and it eventually took the nondescript pair of Karun Nair (2 for 17) and Murali Vijay (2 for 15) to break through. Between them, Nair and Vijay bowled 11 of the 86 overs of the day. Before today Nair had 8 First-Class wickets from 47 matches and Vijay 6 from 111. Earlier, India Red skipper Dinesh Karthik won the toss and elected to bat. The opening session of the day clearly went in the favour of the Reds. Panchal and Chatterjee added 61 for the opening stand without being dismissed. They lost their opening wicket in the form of Chatterjee in the post-tea session, but Ishank Jaggi (23) made sure there was no further loss of wicket. Dinner was taken at 141 for 1.
The post-dinner session saw some improvement from the Greens as the unlikely pair of Nair and Vijay broke through four times. Rahul Singh (4) and Rishabh Pant (11) both fell cheaply. Amidst all this, Panchal got to his century but was dismissed right after. Karthik (15*) and Krishnappa Gowtham (10*) remained unbeaten at stumps.
Brief scores
India Red 232 for 5 (Sudip Chatterjee 52, Priyank Panchal 105; Murali Vijay 2 for 15) vs India Green.
