Boundary for him, and he goes onto 94. Three overs remaining and Bairstow is at 95, can he reach his century today? He reaches on to 98 with a double and a single. Surely his heart must be pumping fast. One more for him, and he reaches 99. Bairstow shouts in excitement as he reaches his century, his second this series and first at Lord’s. That’s the end of Day 1, in which Cook and Bairstow helped England reach 279. Meet you tomorrow for the Day 2.

Live Cricket Score and Updates | England  260/6, 85 overs| Chris Woakes 22(43), Jonny Bairstow 89(145) Brilliant ball from Mathews, nearly removing Woakes. Nine overs remaining for the day. Eranga comes back into the attack. Shot of the day from Bairstow through covers for a boundary. Woakes joins the party with a good shot for a boundary. And an even better shot from Woakes, who is growing in confidence. New ball not doing much wonders for Sri Lanka. Woakes is enjoying his batting now, scoring a straight drive for boundary which would have made his partner proud.

Live Cricket Score and Updates | England  238/6, 80 overs| Chris Woakes 4(21), Jonny Bairstow 84(136) Good ball from Lakmal, which just beats the outside edge of Woakes’ bat. Mathews calls for a review after umpire judges Woakes not out for a catch. And the third umpire agrees to it. The visitors have finished their reviews now. The new ball is due now for Sri Lanka. And Sri Lanka have taken it.

Live Cricket Score and Updates | England  227/6, 73.4 overs| Jonny Bairstow 76(116) Another brilliant drive from Ali, although he gets only three runs for it rather than a boundary. Drinks have been called in, with England 224 for 5. Another wicket and England’s tail will be exposed, although Woakes can bat. OUT! Herath scalps his second as Ali is caught at slips by Mathews. Next to come in is Woakes.

Ali c Mathews b Herath 25(60)

Live Cricket Score and Updates | England  218/5, 70 overs| Moeen Ali 19(48), Jonny Bairstow 75(110) Bairstow has surely rode his luck today, and again survives a scare, as his edge goes right between the gap at slips. Ali is probably the last recognized batsman, with Woakes primarily an bowler. Hence it is important these two batsmen stick together for England. Lovely cover drive from Ali, who will be high on confidence after his fantastic knock in the last game. It also bought up the 50-run partnership between the pair.

Live Cricket Score and Updates | England  190/5, 63 overs| Moeen Ali 6(25), Jonny Bairstow 60(91) | England batters up the tempo by scoring 15 runs in the last three overs. Bairstow drives Pradeep over the cover region. The second boundary was a bit lucky. An inside edge off a good length ball bowled by Eranga fetched Bairstow four runs. Ali hit the first big shot of his innings as he drove Pradeep for another boundary, this time to the covers. England are looking slightly better now.

Live Cricket Score and Updates | England  175/5, 60 overs| Moeen Ali 1(16), Jonny Bairstow 50(82) | Bairstow has got to his half century. He hit seven boundaries en route his fifty. Ali, on the other end is taking his time to settle down. Nuwan Pradeep and Shaminda Eranga are bowling currently. Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad are next in the batting order. Owing to this the responsibility on Ali and Bairstow is pretty high. At present, England are finding it difficult to go even past 260.

Live Cricket Score and Updates | England  165/5, Tea | Moeen Ali 1(9), Jonny Bairstow 44(76) | Mathews to continue. Risky run taken from Bairstow, who made it home despite the direct hit. A beauty of an shot from Cook, whose cover drives have been phenomenal today. The way he is batting, it seems he is longing for a big score, which has eluded him in the past few Tests. Bairstow gets lucky, as his edge flies away from slips and goes towards the boundary line. OUT! Skipper Cook is caught lbw of Pradeep, and decides not to contest. Moeen Ali is the next to arrive. And it’s Tea.

Cook lbw Pradeep 85(173)

Live Cricket Score and Updates | England  143/4, 50 overs | Jonny Bairstow 34(52), Alastair Cook 74(159) Boundary of Herath’s very first ball from Bairstow. Another misfield from a Sri Lankan as the pair reach 50-run partnership, second of this innings. Mathews brings himself back into attack. Having completed his fifth over, he is yet to concede a run. While he may not be a wicket-taker, he has definitely built pressure from one end. Lack of runs is making Bairstow take risks against Herath. And finally Mathews concede a run from his bowling, as Cook scampers for a single. Brilliant shot from Cook of Herath, scoring his side’s first boundary in almost five overs.

Live Cricket Score and Updates | England  127/4, 45 overs | Jonny Bairstow 27(39), Alastair Cook 66(142) Good ball from Eranga, just missing the edge of Bairstow. Maiden over from Herath, who has bowled really well. Another good ball from Eranga, who is causing Bairstow a few problems. England will be happy the pair have settled together and have built a partnership. Good running between the wickets as the pair complete a double quite easily.

Live Cricket Score and Updates | England  118/4, 40 overs | Jonny Bairstow 23(23), Alastair Cook 60(128) Bairstow is playing fearlessly at the moment. He is scoring at over a strike rate of 100, which removes the scoring pressure from Cook’s shoulders. Good shot from Cook, which earns him a double. Herath back into the attack.

Live Cricket Score and Updates | England  110/4, 36 overs | Jonny Bairstow 19(18), Alastair Cook 56(109) Another boundary for Bairstow, who from the start has looked to be positive. He is the key along with Cook at the crease. What a cover drive from Cook. The shot oozed class the moment it left the bat. DROPPED! Bairstow is dropped by Eranga. And the very next ball, the batsman gets a boundary. A beautiful cover drive from Bairstow earns him his fourth boundary. He looks like making them pay for the missed opportunity.

Live Cricket Score and Updates | England  90/4, 33 overs | Jonny Bairstow 5(6), Alastair Cook 52(102) | Good cover drive from Vince earns him a boundary. A partnership is needed at this stage for England to settle the nerves. OUT! Another one falls. This time it’s Vince who departs. Jonny Bairstow is the next to come in for England, who are in a desperate situation now.

Vince b Pradeep 10(17)

Live Cricket Score and Updates | England  77/3, 30 overs | James Vince 3(9), Alastair Cook  51(99) | We are back underway. A double through midwicket and Cook reaches his half-century, his 48th in Tests. He has looked really composed till now. Maiden from Pradeep to end 30 overs.

Live Cricket Score and Updates | England  74/3, Lunch | James Vince 3(9), Alastair Cook  48(87) | Just a few overs to go for Lunch, and Sri Lanka have edged the game back. At drinks, England were cruising comfortably, but two wickets in quick succession have turned the match around. Review from Sri Lanka. OUT! Root is dismissed for 3 by Lakmal. James Vince is the next to come in. Surely Sri Lanka will go into lunch the happier side.

Root lbw Lakmal 3(9)

Live Cricket Score and Updates | England  69/2, 25 overs | Joe Root 2(3), Alastair Cook  47(84) | Mathews continues on, and ends his fourth over having not conceded a run yet. Another wicket and the visitors will be well and truly back in this game. Misfied from Mathews, allowing Cook to come back for three. Cook gets another boundary as he gets up to 46. OUT! Lakmal removes the out of form Compton for 1. Joe Root is the next to arrive at the crease.

Compton c Chandimal b Lakmal 1(11)

Live Cricket Score and Updates | England  56/1, 20 overs | Nick Compton 0(2), Alastair Cook  37(66) | Skipper Angelo Mathews comes in to bowl, hoping to break this partnership. Back to back maidens since the drinks break. Make it three now. Swing and a miss, seems like lack of runs is getting on the nerves of Cook. Finally runs, and boy they came in some fashion. A brilliant cover drive from Cook earns England their first runs post drinks. Call for lbw from Mathews, but the umpire shows no interest. Right decision though. Three back to back maidens from Mathews. Rangana Herath gets his turn with the ball. And he has got them the wicket. Nick Compton comes onto the crease.

Hales c Mathews b Herath 18(52)

Live Cricket Score and Updates | England  51/0, 14 overs | Alex Hales  18(32), Alastair Cook  32(52) | First bowling change, as Nuwan Pradeep comes in for Lakmal. Good piece of fielding from Rangana Herath, saving at least a couple. For the third time today, Hales plays and misses, nearly getting the edge. Eranga is causing him trouble. Brilliant shot from Cook, beats Herath at mid-on to get another boundary. Hales also gets another boundary, this time of Pradeep. And 50-run partnership comes up between this pair, their first this series. And it’s Drinks, with England well on top.

Live Cricket Score and Updates | England  31/0, 9 overs | Alex Hales  14(23), Alastair Cook  17(31) | Fine shot from Hales for a boundary. England are going along well, scoring at a good pace and playing some delightful shots. Beauty from Eranga, as Hales is beaten all ends up. Nearly unplayable! England bat till No.8, with Broad at No.9 also capable. Hence Sri Lanka need at least two wickets quickly. Loose ball from Eranga, and Hales punishes it to get his second boundary of his innings.

Live Cricket Score and Updates | England  22/0, 5 overs | Alex Hales  6(8), Alastair Cook  16(22) | First boundary of the day for Cook. He will feel confident having reached the 10,000 run mark last match. Close! A really good bowl from Lakmal, nearly getting the edge of Hales’ bat. Running between the wickets has been good between these two, as they scamper for another two runs. Neither Eranga nor Lakmal are getting much assistance from the pitch. Another boundary for Cook, who looks in fine touch.

Live Cricket Score and Updates | England  4/0, 2 overs | Alex Hales  1(3), Alastair Cook 3(9) | Shaminda Eranga starts off the proceedings. Cook gets his team’s first runs of the day with a double through the midwicket. Suranga Lakmal comes in to bowl his first over.

England have won the toss and will bat first!

England have simply been clinical over the last two Tests. Their win by an innings and 88 runs in the first Test at Headingley laid the foundation for them to take the series in the second. James Anderson and Alastair Cook have been among the records for them. But, that doesn’t mean the others have not performed. The team has played as a unit and will go out their with a clear motive in mind at Lord’s — Revenge with a whitewash.

Sri Lanka on the other hand are making slow-progress in the format. They did show some fight in the second Test at Chester-le-Street after a poor show in the first one. Dinesh Chandimal had played a fine innings in the 2nd innings, but it was by then too late. The Lankans will look to avoid a whitewash and head to the ODI’s on a positive note, but will have to be on top of their game.
