India’s hopes of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) were dealt a massive blow following their loss to Australia at the Adelaide Oval. With the third Test match at The Gabba expected to end in a draw, India’s chances of reaching the WTC final can again take a major hit.
If the third Test does end in a draw, then the Men in Blue will have to win at least 1 of the remaining 2 Tests in the Border-Gavaskar series to keep their hopes alive. However, they will also have to rely on Sri Lanka to beat Australia in the upcoming 2-match Test series which will be played in the island nation.
However, 2 wins in the final two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar series will make sure that India qualify for the WTC Final even if Australia win both of their matches against Sri Lanka. If the series ends 2-2, India will qualify if Sri Lanka beat Australia by 1-0 in the 2-match series.
India will also be relying on Pakistan to help them qualify for the WTC final. If the Border-Gavaskar series does end at 2-2, the Men in Blue will qualify for the final if Pakistan ends up beating South Africa in their upcoming 2-match Test series. If that happens, then the Proteas will miss out in the final and India will go on to face Australia.
All these upcoming Test series will be crucial to decide the 2 finalists who will face each other in the final of the coveted WTC tournament next year.
