Faf du Plessis, the South African skipper, scored 85 off 65 deliveries and powered his team to a challenging total of 163 for three in the third and the final Twenty20 International against Sri Lanka at Hambantota on Tuesday.

Walking into bat on the second ball of the innings, after opener Henry Davids fell to Nuwan Kulasekara’s in-swinger for the second time in two matches, du Plessis played a responsible knock against the hosts. He started his innings in a streaky fashion edging the second ball of the innings between wicket-keeper Dinesh Chandimal and wide-slip. He then dispatched a wide delivery from Sachitra Senanayake to the cover boundary.

Quinton de Kock was dismissed in the eighth over but that brought JP Duminy to the crease. He and Du Plessis formed a lethal combination and added 112 runs for the third wicket in just 12.1 overs.

During the course of this partnership, Du Plessis brought up his half century and was looking set to guide his side to a good total with some powerful hitting towards the end. Duminy too had played his part to score a half century. In the final over of the innings, Du Plessis was finally dismissed for 85 from 65 deliveries, an innings that consisted of 10 fours and three sixes.

However, by this point in time, he had done enough to help South Africa post a challenging total of 163 for three at the end of the innings.

Brief scores:

South Africa 163 for 3 in 20 overs (Faf du Plessis 85, JP Duminy 51) vs Sri Lanka
