South Africa produced an inspired bowling performance to restrict hapless Pakistan to a modest total of 98 for nine in their first Twenty20 International match at Dubai on Wednesday.
Electing to bat first, Pakistan made a horrendous start to their campaign, losing two wickets with only four runs on the board as South African pacers created lot of trouble for their batsmen.
It was due to lower order batsman Umar Akmal that Pakistan was able to inch close to the 100-run mark. Umar scored runs from balls with the help of four boundaries and a six in a bid to bail his side out of trouble.
For South Africa, pace spearhead Dale Steyn and Lonwabo Tsotsobe produced a stunning spells of to put their side on top.
Steyn returned with the figures of 4-0-15-3, whereas Tsotsobe claimed two wickets for just nine runs off his four overs.
Early in the innings, Pakistan lost their opener Ahmed Shehzad on the fifth ball of the first over off Tsotsobe, and in the second over, Steyn got Sohaib Maqsood caught behind the wickets for four.
Pakistan slipped further when their captain Mohammad Hafeez was caught behind one ball later after Maqsood’s dismissal for a duck.
The hosts could never recover from the early blows as the middle order failed to put up a strong fight against the South African pacers.
Brief scores:
Pakistan 98 for 9 in 20 overs (Umar Akmal 49; Dale Steyn 3 for 15, Lonwabo Tsotsobe 2 for 9, Imran Tahir 2 for 17) vs South Africa.
