Former England captain Nasser Hussain believes that Pakistan could have been the biggest threat to England’s rise in the Test rankings if the team from subcontinent had stayed clear off controversies.
“If you had all of the Pakistan team available and all fit, and none of the politics, and none of the going around in circles with captains and all that, with their bowling attack, they would be a threat to world cricket but unfortunately that’s not the case,” Hussain said in an interview to a leading sports website.
Hussain felt that in current situation, the nearest challengers to England’s domination were South Africa, which are number two in the rankings.
“South Africa are a threat, they rely heavily on Morne Morkel and Dale Steyn. Imran Tahir is a very useful addition to them.”
“Jacques (Kallis) is not young, (Mark) Boucher is not young. I don’t know who is going to keep wicket, whether AB (de Villiers) will take over. They are a good side, but I still fancy England.”
