Riding on a sublime hundred by Tamim Iqbal and vital contributions from Imrul Kayes and Mushfiqur Rahim, Bangladesh posted 341 for 9 from their 50 overs against Pakistan in the warm-up fixture ahead of ICC Champions Trophy 2017. Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Bangladesh were in complete command of their innings from the beginning. Barring a few minor hiccups towards the end, which cost them 15-20 runs, Bangladesh did well to post a very challenging total. Tamim (102) and Kayes (61) were the chief contributors for them while Mushfiqur also chipped in with crucial 46. For Pakistan, Junaid Khan, Shadab Khan and Hasan Ali were amongst the wickets. It was expected to be a run-fest from the beginning, with approximately 40-yard boundary on one side of the field. The Bangladeshi openers made good use of the shorter boundaries, scoring at a good rate from the beginning. Soumya Sarkar missed out on making good use of the conditions though, falling for 19 after being caught by Babar Azam off Junaid’s bowling in the slip. Kayes then joined Tamim and the two started playing cautiously, before Tamim cut-loose in the 9th over of the innings, scoring 25 runs off it.

He opened up his arms after that over and never allowed the scoring rate to drop below 6. Kayes, who was slow to begin with, also picked pace gradually. The two batsmen added 142 runs for the second wicket at a brisk rate, completing their respective fifties in the process. Leg-spinner Shadab then got Pakistan the breakthrough, when he trapped Kayes in front of the stumps for run-a-ball 61.

Tamim and Mushfiqur then carried the momentum forward. Tamim raced to his hundred of 88 balls, but fell soon after. He became Shadab’s second victim, falling for 102 off 93 balls, a knock which was laced with 9 fours and 4 sixes. Mushfiqur played a breezing knock of 46 (35 balls, 3 x 4s, 3 x 6s), but got dismissed at the wrong time.

Shakib Al Hasan (23) and Mahmudullah (29) then added 49 runs for the fifth wicket, but Hasan removed them in the same over, pegging Bangladesh back a bit. From here on, Bangladesh lost the momentum slightly, and ended up getting at least 15-20 runs short from what they ideally looked like achieving. Pakistan bowlers were spot on in the death overs, during which Mosaddek Hossain (26) scored bulk of the runs.

For Pakistan, Junaid picked up 4 wickets while Shadab and Hasan got 2 wickets each. All the bowlers though went for runs, which allowed Bangladesh stay ahead while batting. It will be interesting to see whether Pakistan can chase this big a total. Remember, all 15 players in the squad can take a part in the warm-up match, but only 11 can bowl and bat.
