Mirpur: Apr 5, 2014
Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the Indian captain has said that his teammates have to keep emotions at bay when they take on Sri Lanka in the ICC World T20 2014 final at Mirpur on Sunday. Dhoni said that India have to do the job on the day and eye a good performance. It is interesting to note that Dhoni could become the first captain in history to hold the World Cup, the Champions Trophy and the World T20, that is if India win on Sunday.
Speaking to reporters on the eve of the final, Dhoni said, “We have to keep emotions at bay. As professionals, we learn to control. At some point, players play a big game so they know how to control emotions.”
When asked whether he has always had this calm attitude, he said, “I am someone who hates losing. When I was you, it was tough to control. Over time, I learnt to be calm. There are situations where you don’t want to take an emotional decision, but have to take a practical one.”
Dhoni’s men have had the advantage over the Sri Lankans in tournament finals, but Dhoni says that it doesn’t matter. “In this format, psychological advantage doesn’t matter. It all boils down to how you play on that day.”
When asked about the possible feat of having three major trophies in his cabinet, Dhoni said that his team isn’t thinking about it. “It is important to do well in the final and to play for the country.”
Dhoni was also asked about the 2007 World T20. India’s young men had stunned the world by winning the inaugural tournament. “It is very difficult to recall 2007 now. People were very excited. We hope to do well in this final.”
