Ireland trumped the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by 21 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis method in a rain-affected Group B qualifying match of the ICC World T20 2014 at Sylhet on Wednesday.
Chasing 124, Ireland were 103 for three after 14.2 overs when rain interrupted the play. Ireland captain William Porterfield was batting on 33, as he added 80 runs with Ed Joyce after Paul Stirling was retired hurt to put his side in commanding position.
Joyce fell after scoring 43 off 38 balls with the help of four boundaries and a six.
Earlier in the match, Ireland put up a disciplined bowling effort to restrict United Arab Emirates to 123 for six.
Invited to bat, UAE openers started well putting on 35 runs in five overs, before Faizan Asif was run out. Shaiman Anwar top-scored for the Irish side with a 28-ball 30. Opener Amjad Ali made 20 while Amjad Javed scored a brisk 19 with the help of three fours towards the end.
Ali struck fours boundaries while Anwar hit two sixes, in what was a mediocre batting display.
Ireland bowling was led by Paul Stirling (3/12) and Kevin O’Brien (2/17). The other bowlers chipped in with useful contributions as the UAE batsmen found the going tough in this crucial match.
Brief scores:
United Arab Emirates 123 for 6 in 20 overs (Shaiman Anwar 30; Paul Stirling 3 for 12, Kevin O’Brien 2 for 17) lost to Ireland 103 for 3 in 14.2 overs (William Porterfield 33*, Ed Joyce 43; Sharif Asadullah 2 for 21) by 21 runs via D/L method.
