Mirpur: Apr 5, 2014
Lasith Malinga, Sri Lanka’s captain for the ICC World T20 2014 final against India has said that his side are looking forward to do well for Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. The experienced duo had announced before the tournament that they were quitting Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) at the end of this event. Now that Sri Lanka have reached the final,. it is a good opportunity for the team to bid them a good farewell from the format.
“They are amongst the greats in international cricket and Sri Lanka cricket. I am happy to captain them and they help the youngsters and me a lot. We are looking forward to do well for them,” said Malinga as he spoke to reporters on the eve of the final at Mirpur.
Sri Lanka have the likes of Tillakaratne Dilshan, Jayawardene and Sangakkara, three former captains in their side. Also, they have Angelo Mathews, the present Test and One-Day International captain. When asked about their influence, Malinga said, “They give good advice and their experiences help us. I need their advice and also to bring all that experience together.”
Sri Lanka have lost quite a few finals, but won the Asia Cup at the same venue last month. Malinga believes that will help his team and that they will shield themselves from the pressure. “It is a normal game. We know it is a final, but we think as if it is a normal game,” Malinga said.
Virat Kohli, the Indian batsman has a fantastic record against Sri Lanka and while Malinga did appreciate him, he did say that, “A bowler takes one good ball to get a batsman out.”
